Initiatives for Students

Be an advocate for your students and their future in IT.

Next Generation IT Internship Program

Internships provide students with real world experience in the IT field. The IT-oLogy Next Generation IT Internship Guide provides great resources to develop a college internship program.

Virtual Job Shadowing

Virtual Job Shadows are interactive lessons built for the short attention spans of teenagers and young adults. The lessons allow students to remotely experience jobs that might not be located nearby. Also, students can complete virtual job shadows to make sure they are interested in a career field before visiting the job site.

Why Virtual Job Shadows?

  • Provides real-life comparisons for everyday tasks and job-specific tasks
  • Encourages students to focus on specific skills to prepare for a job in the specified career field
  • Requires students to actively participate in the virtual job shadow. They cannot simply “click through” the learning experience.
  • Creates a friendly and encouraging learning environment that grabs the students' interest through the use of interactive educational games
  • Answers common career-related questions through video examples, subject-matter expert interviews, pictures and narrated text
  • Gives students opportunities to experience the typical tasks of the career field through behind-the-scenes videos and interviews

Create IT Computer Camp

Midlands ninth, 10th and 11th graders are encouraged to apply for the Create IT Computer Camp. Students will learn about the exciting careers in information technology while building their own laptop computers.

Students and faculty from the University of South Carolina along with IT industry representatives will lead activities surrounding the wide range of career options available in IT and the necessary skill sets for succeeding in these careers. Attendees will be engaged in activities designed to reinforce this learning, including the assembly of their own laptop computer.
